Stack Strenght

Traditional Chinese architecture is renowned for its unique structural element known as Dougong (斗栱)—a complex wooden bracket system that distributes weight and enhances building stability. This system has been fundamental to ancient Chinese temples, palaces, and monumental structures, providing both structural support and artistic expression.
The Stack Strength project adapts the fundamental principles of Dougong but modifies the construction method to suit contemporary materials and constraints. Instead of using meticulously carved interlocking wooden pieces, the project utilizes small, irregularly sized wooden scraps assembled into layered structures, bonded with hot glue rather than traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. This approach democratizes the construction process, making sophisticated structural systems accessible without requiring specialized woodworking skills.
