ReTimber

ReTimber transforms industrial wood waste—specifically cutting byproducts measuring 5×5cm in cross-section—into structural beam assemblies using 60-degree dovetail joinery and wooden dowel locking. Inspired by Herzog & de Meuron's Ricola Storage building, which utilized wood scraps for cladding, this project advances the concept by creating primary structural elements. The adhesive-free assembly enables complete disassembly and reuse, addressing end-of-life concerns while eliminating chemical binders that complicate disposal through burning.
Critical structural insight: Dovetail orientation responds to beam loading behavior. The joint receives both compression forces from floor loads and lateral tension forces, preventing piece separation more effectively than alternative joint geometries tested.
