Geodesic Paper Mache Dome

TH: Learning from the Masters — ก่อนหน้านี้เราได้ศึกษาการทำงานของ Pier Luigi Nervi จากงาน Palazzetto dello Sport และนำมาตั้งคำถามเกี่ยวกับความคุ้มทุนของการ Prefabrication ในอาคารขนาดเล็ก โดยนำกระบวนการขึ้นงานของ Pier Luigi Nervi มาทำให้ง่ายขึ้นด้วยการลด element ลง มาพัฒนาโครงสร้าง geodesic dome ที่ปกติใช้การสร้างฟอร์มผ่านการถ่ายแรงของ member และ joint เปลี่ยนมาสร้างฟอร์มผ่าน surface 2D ที่สามารถประกอบขึ้นรูปเป็นพื้นผิวโค้งได้ โดยใช้วิธี Prefabrication on site ของ Nervi ที่เกิดจากการใช้ขั้นตอนการทำซ้ำ ทำให้สามารถสร้าง Prefabrication ได้โดยไม่ใช้ต้นทุนสูงและมีความรวดเร็ว
EN: Learning from the Masters — building on an earlier study of Pier Luigi Nervi's Palazzetto dello Sport, this project questions the cost-efficiency of prefabrication in small-scale buildings. It simplifies Nervi's construction process by reducing the number of elements, and develops a geodesic dome whose form is normally generated through the load transfer of members and joints — instead generating the form through 2D surfaces that can be assembled into a curved surface. By applying Nervi's "prefabrication on site" approach, which relies on a repetitive process, prefabrication can be produced quickly and at low cost.

Proposition

EN: Take Pier Luigi Nervi's "prefabrication on site" process, simplify it by reducing elements, and ask whether prefabrication is cost-efficient for small-scale buildings — shifting the geodesic dome's form-making from member-and-joint load transfer to assembly from 2D surfaces.

Research Context

EN: The work references the study of Pier Luigi Nervi, in particular the Palazzetto dello Sport and his "prefabrication on site" system that uses repetition of steps to reduce cost. This is applied to a geodesic dome calculated on the 3V 5/8 system (a configuration with two isosceles-triangle modules).

Experimental Methodology

Timeline:

  • Day 0: ทำ template แม่แบบ type a และ b ในคอมพิวเตอร์เพื่อ print ออกมาเป็นแบบในการทำ mother
  • Day 5: daughter type a
  • Day 7-8: ทำ daughter type b จนครบ 75 ชิ้น
EN: The work is divided into four main stages: 1) making the molds (mothers), 2) soaking and pulping the paper, 3) making the daughters, 4) assembling all daughters into the geodesic dome.
    Timeline:
  • Day 0: Create template type a and b on the computer to print as patterns for the mothers.
  • Day 1-2: Make 4 each of mother molds a and b from wood, using notched joints so each side can be removed and reused; quantities calculated from output-per-hour and number of group members. While making molds, paper is soaked, ground and dried before paper mache.
  • Day 3-4: Begin making daughters of both type a and b; after each is done it sets for 30 minutes, is removed from the mold and left to dry. After about 2 days the daughters warped due to weather, so bricks were placed on top to weigh them down.
  • Day 5: All 30 type-a daughters completed.
  • Day 6: Made 2 additional type-b molds to match the number of people.
  • Day 7-8: Made type-b daughters to a total of 75 pieces.
  • Day 8-10: Assembly — cable threaded between daughters to form pentagons and hexagons, with paper clips joining them into the geodesic dome.

Material / Structural Performance

EN: Forming the surface with Nervi's process required 105 prefabricated pieces in two components: an isosceles triangle with a 30.27 cm base and 21.32 cm height, and an isosceles triangle with a 30.27 cm base and 26.97 cm height. About 500-1000 A3 sheets were used (a volume of 0.0125 cubic meters including defects) to build a geodesic dome 1.5 m in diameter. The paper-pulp to glue ratio was 2:1, the ratio at which glue bonds best with pulp (the amount of pulp is the factor that most affects strength).
Technical strengths: mold design and production process enable large-volume repetition that is fast and easy to do on site (notched-wood molds can be disassembled and reused); paper mache makes the structure light and thin; cable-tie and paper-clip joints make the structure demountable — cable ties join the triangular daughters into pentagons, hexagons and trapezoids, and paper clips then assemble these into the geodesic dome.

Future Research

EN: Related concept: structural calculation of the geodesic dome on the 3V 5/8 system (a configuration with two isosceles-triangle modules), which can be developed further by applying this repetitive, low-cost, demountable prefabrication-on-site process to other small-scale buildings.
